Understanding How iSpeechCards Interprets OPML

The structure of OPML is different from the data structure iSpeechCards uses internally.  When iSpeechCards imports OPML it is converted using some special rules.  This section shows how the rules are applied to help you create outliner files in the best format for iSpeechCards.

When importing OPML, cards are created with a default duration of 1 minute and the default font size.

The following interpreting rules are also applied:

  1. Top level outline items become new cards.  The outline text becomes the card title.
  2. Second level items become text lines.
  3. Third level items become bulletted text.
  4. Fourth level and deeper items also become bulletted text.

The arrows in the image above show the first rule - creation of cards from top level outline items.  The application on the left is OmniOutliner displaying an outline document.  On the right we see the card set produced after importing into iSpeechCards.  You can see how the card titles are obtained from the top level menu items.  The cards have a default duration of 1 minute.

The numbered arrows are numbered with each of the interpreting rules.  Each outliner item becomes a text line on a card.  Because iSpeechCards bulletted lists are just one level deep, outline items nested deeper are "flattened" into the same bulletted list.
